For Hair Essentials owner Christine Donovan, the month of October has a special meaning that goes beyond the leaves changing colors. It’s the month where her salon, a six-time WickedLocal Reader’s Choice winner for Best Salon, holds its “Streak” for a cause fundraiser. This month-long drive generates funds for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute’s – Breast Cancer Fund as part of Breast Cancer Awareness month. For this effort and other charitable activities, Donovan has been named the recipient of The Smiling Neighbor award given by South Weymouth Dentist Dr. Richard Wolfert, DMD.
“In many ways, going to the dentist and the hair salon is quite similar. Some people have trepidation before visiting both of us. At the end of the appointment, more often than not, they leave with a smile on their face and feeling better about themselves,” said Dr. Wolfert, AKA “The Toothboss”, whose practice is located at 1121 Main Street. “When you visit Hair Essentials, you look better and feel better because of the work Christine and her staff do. It makes you feel that much better when you realize what they do for the community as well.”
The Streak campaign takes place during October. For $15, customers can get a pink hair extension to wear in their hair and show their support for Breast Cancer Awareness month. One hundred percent of the proceeds from this effort go to Dana Farber’s Breast Cancer Fund.
In addition, Hair Essentials conducts a number of other charitable endeavors to benefit the greater Weymouth community. Those include Easter and Thanksgiving food drives for the Weymouth Food Pantry and an annual Toys for Tots Drive.
“We have been in business for 19 years and have the best customers you could ask for. I’ve always believed the best way to show your gratitude is to give something back to people who may not be as fortunate,” said Donovan, a lifelong Weymouth resident. “I’m very grateful to Dr. Wolfert for recognizing our salon with the Smiling Neighbor award.”
For being selected as the Smiling Neighbor, Donovan had the choice of receiving a $50 gift card to Stockholders or a Sonicare Easy Clean model (she chose the toothbrush).
The Smiling Neighbor award is given out on a quarterly basis to citizens of Weymouth going above and beyond the call of duty for their fellow citizens.
