A question we often get has to do with teeth whitening. While we do offer teeth whitening services, we also let people know that results can vary.
How?
The best results occur when using custom-made trays and a bleaching gel dispensed to the tray for a time prescribed by the dentist. That’s what we do here at the Toothboss. There are similar, over-the-counter products that are sold at your local pharmacy/grocery stores that replicate this process but typically don’t get the same results. Because we fabricate a custom tray that fits better around your teeth, the gel tends to be more effective.
The current shade (color) of your teeth will impact the result. If your teeth are already light, you will not see as dramatic a result as somebody’s whose teeth were more yellow, brown or gray. People whose teeth are grayish as a result of using a specific antibiotic as a child, may not see as good a result.
The bleach does present some issues if you have recession of your gums and the roots of your teeth are exposed (cold sensitivity) or if you overfill the tray and it gets on your gums (burning sensation). Both of these circumstances can cause some discomfort, but are reversible if you merely remove the tray and give it a few days.
There had been some concern that teeth whitening could damage the enamel of your teeth. After many years of teeth whitening, there’s no evidence to support that.
Similarly, there had been reports that teeth whitening could damage your dentin, the inner layer of your tooth structure. Again, after years of performing teeth whitening with trays, nothing has been substantiated.
Does all this mean you should not try teeth whitening? No. Far from it. You will get a much better result from teeth whitening via customized trays than any whitening toothpaste on the market. The only thing is you need to keep in mind is that results will vary so keeping your expectations modest and you should be good to go!
