Betty and Bob MacIntyre first got involved with NAMI when their son was first diagnosed with schizophrenia at age 19. The information and comfort their family received from attending NAMI meetings spurred the two to volunteer. For their work over the past 10 years with NAMI, the MacIntyre’s have been named the recipient of The Smiling Neighbor award given by South Weymouth Dentist Dr. Richard Wolfert, DMD.
NAMI is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. NAMI’s association of hundreds of local affiliates and volunteers who work in the community to raise awareness and provide support and education. In addition to Bob and Betty’s volunteer work, Betty serves as the president of the president of the board of NAMI South Shore Affiliate and is a co-facilitator for the Family Support Group which is held in Weymouth.
“Sometimes life gives you lemons. It’s the special people like Bob and Betty who turn those lemons into lemonade. What makes them special is that when life dealt them a blow they used it as a tool to help their son and the other families dealing with the issues that come when a loved one suffers from mental illness,” said Dr. Wolfert, AKA “The Toothboss”, whose practice is located at 1121 Main Street. “I’m honored to honor them with our Smiling Neighbor award.”
“We found NAMI shortly after our son was diagnosed. We took the class and it helped us tremendously. When I chose to retire from teaching to take care of my son, I knew that I would give back to NAMI someday,” said Betty. “Our son, by the way, is doing very well. At 32 he is back in college getting his degree in media arts at Emerson and working part time as a videographer for a wealth management company. No one would ever know that he has an illness unless he told them.”
The MacIntyres have been married 45 years and reside in Hingham. The couple has three children and two grandchildren.
For being selected as the Smiling Neighbor, the MacIntyre’s had the choice of receiving a $50 gift card to Stockholders or a Sonicare Easy Clean model (they chose Stockholders).
